Everybody is aware of the importance of staying active into old age. Regular exercise keeps us healthy, prevents mental and physical illness and helps build communities and social networks. As we age it gets harder and harder to move around, getting outdoors and dealing with uneven terrain, inclement weather and bodily complaints can quickly crush fitness motivation. In a recent article on aging and fitness, verywell.com suggests no less than 30 minutes of active walking per day, 5 days per week. This is regime is echoed throughout the health and wellness literature and community. So what do you do if you can’t access a safe and pleasant outdoor environment to exercise in everyday? The answer to that question is simple, and one many of our BH Fitness representatives answer on a daily basis with our elliptical and treadmill products. Many of our elderly customers live in parts of the world where climate and weather, busy city streets and uneven pathways make it risky for them to utilise their geographic location for outdoor exercise. Then there is one of the most common blockers, the bruised ego. We often hear about customers avoiding exercise because they are embarrassed or self-conscious about their physical ability or how they look in their exercise gear. This may sound silly to some, but it is a common problem that hinders successful implementation of a regular fitness routine. In the New York Times best selling book, brain rules, by John Medina the importance of exercise is once again hitting us square on the head. Medina breaks down how the brain responds to regular exercise, how we have evolved from active creatures and how our increasingly sedentary lifestyles are completely against the mechanical function of our brains. Even at two or three times a week (not five as recommended) the risk of Dementia and Alzheimer's disease is halved. Medina bluntly prescribes “to improve thinking skills, move.” So how do you move, actively and regularly when the world outside your home isn’t really fit for calming and regular exercise. You bring the walking track to your living room, in the form of a treadmill.
